We can almost singularly thank David Rawlings for that. His signature guitar tone throughout his and Gillian Welch’s catalogue has been that of his 1935 Olympic, with its sweet and barking single note presence. \u003cbr class=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr class=\"\"\u003eThe Epiphone Olympic saw a handful of body size changes through the first years of production, gradually increasing from the initial 13” wide lower bout upon introduction through to 13-5\/8” in 1933, and then to 14.5” by 1935, only to grow again by another inch shortly thereafter. The Rawlings guitar is the second version, with a lower bout of 13-5\/8” across, the example offered here features the mid-sized 14-1\/2” body, tonally every bit the same minus a slight increase in lower-mid depth frequencies.\u003cbr class=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr class=\"\"\u003eThis Olympic is a wonderful sounding small archtop, with mahogany back and sides, and a carved spruce top. Unlike many other arch tops of this era, the neck has a modern-ish smaller soft v carve and a nut width of 1-11\/16”. Additionally, the 25.5” scale, elevated fingerboard and solid-based bridge place its features amongst the pro-level arch tops of its day.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr class=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003eWell worn and when you play and hear it you’ll know why! No other model sounds like these, with demand and prices increasing rapidly within the last decade, causing Gibson to release an affordable but in no way comparable reissue.\u003cbr class=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr class=\"\"\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003eRecently cared for by the best in the business, Jeff Mallia. Work included is a full neck reset and refret, crack repair to the bass side lower bout (fully stable and almost invisible) and custom solid ebony bridge made to emulate those would on Rawling’s personal Olympics. Body pin is original and repaired, with spare period correct part included.
